IDFA x Melkweg: music selection 2018
IDFA and Melkweg will bring you the best stories behind the music of today and yesterday! The three best rated music documentaries of last edition will be shown in Melkweg Cinema on sunday the 27th of January.
Umar, a member of the African-American art collective The Last Poets is a music pioneer, seen as the godfather of rap. He takes us back to his past, where he was raised in an environment poisoned by racism, poverty and self-hate.
With an absent father unable to forge lasting emotional ties, Umar chose to be a poet, making his personal message political, shocking audiences; “Niggers are scared of revolution!”. Umar's poetry proved to be more powerful than himself, who fell prey to drugs and self-hate, and turned into an absent father and husband himself. Today, 50 years later, Umar get's a second chance; to be the father he could never be before.
