Brazilian formation Azymuth gained international fame in the 1970s and 1980s, when they pioneered with a modern, adventurous blend of jazz, rock and funk. Their fusion of samba resulted in the new genre Samba Doido. In the mid-1990s, just when their momentum seemed lost, they received a much-needed boost and recognition from DJs, musicians and dancers in London as favourites of the thriving Acid Jazz scene that also helped revitalise the careers of fellow Brazilian musicians Marcos Valle and Joyce. Meanwhile, adventurous DJs and beatmakers such as MF Doom, Flying Lotus and Roni Size found inspiration and new sounds to reuse in the trio's classic recordings.
After the death of José Roberto Bertrami (keys) and Ivan Conti (drums & percussion), the only original band member Alex Malheiros renewed the band, who recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. On 10 December, Azymuth is coming to our OZ!
