Bi Visibility Day

Rainbow Academy, NJR, Bi+Nederland, Tessel van Zweege

"In the Netherlands, about 1 million people have bi+ feelings, and therefore can be attracted to more than one gender. So an awful lot! Yet, bi+ people sometimes do not feel at home in the hetero or lhbti+ communities. We are not seen: people assume gay or straight, think it's a phase, and bi+ orientation is still not included in the general equal treatment law. That's why we share our stories with you, so that you do see us.

As a plausible consequence of the invisibility or stereotypical, limited visibility of bi+ people, bi+ people are much more likely to become victims of sexual violence. The differences are alarmingly large: for example, nearly 16 percent of bisexual women experienced physical sexual violence last year, ranging from unwanted touches to rape. Also, bi+ people are statistically more depressed and bisexual women are more likely than others to attempt suicide.

With the campaign 'Ik ben bi+zonder', a collaboration between young queer makers from the Rainbow Academy, the NJR and Bi+Nederland, we want to reveal bi+ stories to show our colourful and diverse community and thus gain more acceptance. On trotters, the campaign images, which link to the bi+ stories on our website, will travel across the country." - Tessel ten Zweege
