In-Edit Opening Night: A-ha The Movie (2021) + 80's Party

In-Edit International Music Documentary Film Festival 2022

Intro: Simone Walraven / Afterparty: DJ Whiplash (80’s Verantwoord)

IN-EDIT is back! From 31 March to 10 April the fourth edition of the music documentary festival takes place at multiple locations this year, including the Melkweg. Again many great music films will be screened this year, like 'A-ha The Movie' from Thomas Robahm and Aslaug Holm at this festive opening night, followed by a 80's afterparty!

With strong archival material combined with animation and authentic stories from the artists themselves, A-ha The Movie is a film about good music, great ambitions, broken friendships and – just maybe, even forgiveness. Directors Thomas Robahm and Aslaug Holm followed the members of the world-renowed Norwegian band ( Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmenen and Pål Waktaar-Savoy) and the consequences stardom had on their lives.

The film follows the band on tour, telling the full story of how three young men followed their impossible dream of becoming Norwegian pop stars. When Take On Me reached number 1 on Billboard in the US in 1985 the dream came true. Or did it?

Three musicians, all in their fifties, are back on tour. They have fans in every age group and play in huge sold-out arenas around the world. They travel in black Mercedes limousines – each in its own – stay separately in luxury hotels and have separate dressing rooms in the backstage area every night. Only on stage they are together. We watch Morton Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar very closely with our camera. Our mission is to find out why these three, friends since childhood, have become so cold with each other. Something is totally rotten between them, but what? The two blondes in the band – Magne and Paul – formed their first band together at the age of 10. And like many teens they dreamed of becoming world-famous rock musicians. In Norway in the 70s that was an impossible and childish dream. The country was primarily known for “Zero Points” in the Eurovision Song Contest and had never produced a band that was famous beyond its borders. But of all people these guys succeeded. Their dream came true. But was it really? All three answer this question with a slight doubt. They actually dreamed of becoming serious rock stars, not teenage idols who were pictured in glossy magazines.

a-ha is Norway’s only international pop band and their hit Take On Me is still one of the most played songs of the last millennium. The film follows the band over a period of four years, telling the full story of how three young men followed their impossible dream of becoming Norwegian pop stars. When Take On Me reached number 1 on Billboard in the US in 1985 the dream came true. Or did it? Almost 35 years after their breakthrough, a-ha still creates magic on stage with their melancholic and timeless music. They tour the world but drive in separate cars and stay in separate wardrobes. They only meet on stage, doing the one thing they love. The film closely portrays the challenging creative and personal dynamics of a group of three strong individuals who have grown up together, but in different directions. What does success do to friendship? Why are they not capable of creating new music together anymore? This is a story of great music, big ambitions, broken friendship – and maybe forgiveness.
