Melkweg Matinee: Leto (2018)

Music That Matters - Sovjet Special

After the success in september Melkweg and the festival Movies that Matter join forces again for two special Sunday afternoons under the name ‘Music that Matters’, this time about popular culture in the former Soviet Union. This first matinee you can watch the new film 'Leto', a punky biopic about the Leningrad underground music scene in the 1980s, based on the early years of pop icon Viktor Tsoi and his legendary band Kino. With Bowie, Blondie and T. Rex in the cassette recorder they charge themselves up for their performances, but the censor is listening in. Before the film there's an introduction by Hester de Boer. And for the agenda, the 2nd matinee is June 16th, with a classic sci-fi.

Hester den Boer (1981) obtained a BA in Comparative Religion Studies, a BA in Russian Language and Culture and an MA in Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Amsterdam. She works as an independent journalist and photographer. Since 2009 Den Boer regularly traveled to Russia, often staying for several weeks in remote cities in Siberia. Her stories have been published in several Dutch media like De Groene Amsterdammer, and NRC. Her photographs have been exhibited in various places including Photoville (US), FoamLab (NL) Kaunas Photo Festival (LT). In 2015 Den Boer was shortlisted for the European Press Prize. She recently released the non-fiction book and photo project 'Suppressed by the Saviour'.
