Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are screening one more time one of the highlights of the last edition: 'Nayola,' an emotionally charged story of three women from the same family whose lives have been torn apart by the deadly civil war in Angola. This first film by Portuguese filmmaker José Miguel Ribeiro interweaves past and present. Nayola, a young mother, goes in search of her husband who went missing in battle, leaving her two-year-old daughter Yara with his grandmother Lelena. Years later, Yara is a rebellious teenager and a subversive rapper who is still frustrated with her mother's decision and with the injustice that keeps Angolan society in a stranglehold. In a mix of 2D and 3D animation, the film paints a powerful picture of the devastating effects of war on multiple generations.
