The Image is Our Voice

Unseen x Melkweg Expo

Eline Benjaminsen, Verena Blok, Pleun Gremmen, Eva Kreuger, Kevin Osepa

Five photographers, fives voices, five projects which raise questions about themes that span from cultural identity to socio-economic processes and politics. The selected photographers have one thing in common:  they use images to question the world around them and propose challenging perspectives to their audience. Examining subjects that are hidden rather than distinctly visible, they are eager to engage with the photographic medium and stretch its borders. We proudly present to you the futures of photography: Eline Benjaminsen, Verena Blok, Pleun Gremmen, Eva Kreuger, and Kevin Osepa.

Unseen Foundation’s raison d’être is to support and promote emerging photographers. In January 2019, the foundation was invited to become part of Futures, a European platform which promotes photographic talent. As a member of the platform, Unseen Foundation has selected five young photographers living in the Netherlands to join Future’s wide talent pool and strengthen the representation of contemporary Dutch art on an international scale. A group of six nominators in addition to a jury were responsible for the final selection of artists.

In order to provide support to the young artists, Unseen Foundation has selected independent curator Iris Sikking to coach and advise them––whatever stage they might be at in the work process. At the end of this program, the resulting work is showcased in a group exhibition in Amsterdam. For this event, Unseen Foundation is partnering with Melkweg Expo––who share the common mission of nurturing and promoting emerging talent. Located at the heart of Amsterdam, Melkweg Expo is an exhibition space for contemporary photography and platform for young artists.

Using their visual approach and interests as a point of departure, curator and coach Iris Sikking, gives these five talents the possibility to develop their projects for an exhibition with Unseen Foundation and Melkweg Expo. This exhibition is not only a moment of presentation but also a unique occasion to open up a dialogue with the public.
