“Creating this series made me feel like I was part of a community. I valued that feeling deeply, because I never felt this kind of belonging before. Everyone is trying to find their place in life. That is what the beauty of Ubuntu means to me.” I Am because We Are. That is the meaning of Ubuntu, how individuals depend on each other, take care of each other to become whole. In August 2015 Rebecca was invited by a dear friend to a wedding. There, she was introduced to the warm, unabashed approach to life of the Congolese community in Belgium and ‘Ubuntu’.
Fascinated by Ubuntu, Rebecca decides to photograph them when they gather in celebration. In these moments the traditions are the highest and the group identity the strongest. During the celebration she captures the ambience, the exciting and quiet moments of family gatherings in black and white images.
Rebecca’s interest lays in the relationship between individual and the group identity. In this photographic documentary she researches Ubuntu and the desire to belong to a group and maintain a group identity in a changing environment. The young Congolese people want to be part of the group and traditions but also realize that they are growing up in a different time and environment, and they are losing touch with the old culture and traditions.
This project places the viewer inside an environment that most have experienced at one time or another for a wedding, party or a wake. A place where the emotions are what is important and the flaws of the room overlooked. It is a symbolic representation for every culture experiencing an environment where they hold strong to their standards and values, in fear of losing their cultural identity.
Rebecca is the winner of the Unseen Dummy Award 2018. Friday May 3 we will open the exhibition and launch her brand new book by Lecturis.
Melkweg Expo is an exhibition space for contemporary photography and a platform for young artists, located in the heart of Amsterdam.
