What if the body in which you’re born, doesn’t correlate with your gender? In ‘State of Identity’ Milan Gies captures young people transitioning. They are in different phases of their transition and reveal themselves, often for the first time, in front of the camera. Milan build a tight relationship with his models by following them for a long period of time. His pictures capture the hard and often painful process of transitioning. He isolates his models from their daily lives and portrays them as living paintings in a studio setting, resulting in iconic images. His work is not about being a man or a women, but about the youngsters’ search for their identity.
