16:30 Doors 17:00 Nigeria’s Afrobeats Movement (2024)
Together with Africadelic we present a special screening event exploring the vibrant world of Nigeria's Afrobeats movement. This scene is at the heart of a cultural renaissance, fueled by a generation of young artists who blend traditional rhythms with modern moves, creating a dynamic, fluid expression of identity and creativity. From the streets of Lagos to the world’s biggest stages, this movement is redefining how African dance is seen and celebrated globally. With an introduction by the Nigerian Afrobeats artist Clinton Francis aka Frezzo.
The event features a series of music videos and short films showcasing Nigeria’s Afrobeats movement by zooming in on some of its stars and festivals: This Is Nigeria (2018), (Un)credited: The Story of Nigeria’s Afro Dance Scene (2022), Ayra Starr: Dare to Dream (2024), Who’s Kitty Amor (2023), Afro Nation: A Movement (2024), and Who Go Pay (2024). Don’t miss this exciting journey into the beats, rhythms, and stories behind Nigeria’s Afrobeats movement!
Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
