14:30 Doors 15:00 My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen! This weekend, we're doing a special Studio Ghibli weekender, in celebration of the new film 'The Boy and the Heron'. We will screen no fewer than ten films by director Hayao Miyazaki, including a unique preview of his latest. Come and enjoy the best Ghibli together on the big screen!

Although My Neighbor Totoro was aimed at a somewhat younger audience, it remains popular with young and old to this day. It is about the sisters Satsuke and Mei who, after moving to the countryside, become friends with the spirit of the forest next to their house. The embodiment of spirits is also a recurring theme in Miyazaki's films. But not everything is as rosy as it seems. Because the mother of Satsuke and Mei is hospitalised, their father has to work more, and the sisters often have to rely on each other. This creates a moving development in the bond between the two sisters. In this film the viewer can lose themselves in the simple life outside the city, not forfeiting the touch of magic that is always included in Miyazaki's works.

Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
