18:30 Doors 19:00 Metropolis (2001)

Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen!

Directed by Rintarô, the co-founder of famed animation studio Madhouse, Metropolis is a visually stunning anime film. In a futuristic city where humans and robots coexist, tensions rise between the two completely different groups. Kenichi and his uncle, detective Shunsaku Ban, leave Japan to visit Metropolis in search of the criminal Dr. Laughton. Finally finding Laughton, Kenichi and Shunsaku are separated and find themselves at the center of a larger conspiracy. Loosely inspired by Osamu Tezuka's manga and Fritz Lang's classic of the same name, Metropolis tells a story of political intrigue and social unrest, inspired by the Cold War. Within Rintarô's filmography, which includes Galaxy Express 999 and Astro Boy, Metropolis demonstrates his ability to combine genres and tell a compelling story with a distinct visual style.

Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
