Warm-up for Kaboom Animation Festival 2023 with the monthly anime night in our Cinema with Harmony from Michael Arias (Tekkonkinkreet) and Takashi Nakamura (A Tree of Palme), the week before the festival gives everything it's got!

Is this the way the world ends? Based on the novel of the same name by science-fiction author Project Itoh, Harmony takes place in a utopia in the distant future. Japan has created a ground-breaking medical technology that controls ethics, health, and social interaction to set up a perfect world. Tuan Kirie, a woman who once survived a group suicide attempt in high school to revolt, works as a senior investigator for the World Health Organisation. Tasked with a mass suicide case, Tuan must face her past and try to uncover the truth behind this world where individual autonomy is threatened to vanish altogether.

Harmony is a thought-provoking comment on a multitude of societal themes. The labyrinthine story gives way to a philosophical journey told through a detailed mix of 2D and 3D animation, produced by Studio 4°C. Let the soul-crushing narrative and lush visuals sink in, and discover another "Brave New World" that perhaps fails to understand what makes us truly human.
