19:00 Doors 19:15 Porco Rosso (1992)

Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen! This weekend, we're doing a special Studio Ghibli weekender, in celebration of the new film 'The Boy and the Heron'. We will screen no fewer than ten films by director Hayao Miyazaki, including a unique preview of his latest. Come and enjoy the best Ghibli together on the big screen!

Porco Rosso unfolds in the Adriatic Sea between the World Wars, following the tale of a disillusioned ex-fighter pilot named Porco Rosso, who is cursed to live as a pig. The film is known for its distinct combination of aviation, humor, and anti-war sentiment. Miyazaki's fascination with flight is probably most evident in this story as it revolves around seaplane dogfights and aerial escapades. The titular character's cynical charm and the film's romanticized portrayal of the era align with Miyazaki's recurrent themes of pacifism and the human connection to nature. Porco Rosso is another visually rich and emotionally resonant film, showcasing Miyazaki's ability to infuse depth and whimsy into every frame.

Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
