21:00 Doors 21:30 Princess Mononoke (1997)

Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen! This weekend, we're doing a special Studio Ghibli weekender, in celebration of the new film 'The Boy and the Heron'. We will screen no fewer than ten films by director Hayao Miyazaki, including a unique preview of his latest. Come and enjoy the best Ghibli together on the big screen!

Princess Mononoke is perhaps Miyazaki's most nature-focused and animistically conscious film. It is about the battle between the industrial progress of man and nature, in which a brave and strong princess acts as spokesperson for the forest. At the same time, an interesting relationship develops between a boy and the princess when he is cursed by one of the spirits of the forest. The film is notable for its complex presentation of a morally ambiguous story that challenges conventional notions of good and evil. Miyazaki's masterful direction imbues the film with breathtaking animation, inspiring characters of varying sizes, and a profound environmental message. The film's strength lies in its ability to combine epic fantasy, social commentary and a deep respect for nature, creating a timeless and thought-provoking masterpiece.

Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
