13:30 Doors 14:00 Spirited Away (2001)

Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen! This weekend, we're doing a special Studio Ghibli weekender, in celebration of the new film 'The Boy and the Heron'. We will screen no fewer than ten films by director Hayao Miyazaki, including a unique preview of his latest. Come and enjoy the best Ghibli together on the big screen!

Spirited Away is the film that won Miyazaki an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. When people think of Studio Ghibli this film is likely to be the first film that they think of. It was made for the daughter of a close friend of Miyazaki's and is therefore also about a 10-year-old girl who travels to the world of the spirits and is forced to work in a bathhouse in order to free the curse that rests on her parents. All of Miyazaki's distinguished talents and themes are portrayed in this visual masterpiece; from fantasy filled frames to enthralling characters to a touching story about two children that help each other out when they are at their lowest. If you have ever wanted to escape this world or transform into a wondrous creature, this is the movie for you.

Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
